Answer to essential questions from Unit 1.1

1. The design process is a systematic problem-solving strategy, with criteria and constraints, used to develop many possible solutions to solve or satisfy human needs or wants and to narrow down the possible solutions to one final choice.

2. Brainstorming allows many opinions and permits all members to contribute their idea resulting in more opinions and testimonies that can help improve the product. Brainstorming also allows people to think "outside the box" resulting in solutions that might otherwise be missed.

3. By criteria it is meant that one must identify what the solution should do and the degree to which the solution will be pursued. The definition for Criteria ( is "a standard of judgment or criticism; a rule or principle for evaluating or testing something," therefore, criteria basically means a rule for evaluating and testing ideas in order to reach the solution. Constraints, however, are limitations such as budget, time, money, etc.

4. Some common constraints put on a product are safety, cost, tax, weight limits, size, etc.

5. The development, progression and or changes (stages) a product undergoes over time eventually evolving into a final and refined stage generally for the better.

6. A few situations that might keep a designer from moving sequentially through a design process are an error in the testing of the product or error in the design of the product.

7. An engineers notebook is a book (journal) in which an engineer will chronologically order, all of his/her work that is associated with a specific design project. Within an engineers notebook the engineer records his/her project ideas, research, interviews, sketches, calculations, experiments, observations, conclusions, and anything else related to a specific design project.

8. Pictorials and tonal shading techniques are used in combination to give sketched objects a realistic look. Designers use isometric, oblique, perspective, and multiview sketching to maintain an object’s visual proportions and to reveal what the product will look like and how it will work. Visual designs are always a good way to communicate to the public what the product will look like and how it will work.
